About scholarships
Scholarships are designed to support motivated and capable students to become independent and pursue their dreams with their own will and responsibility, without giving up their studies for financial reasons.
Before applying for a scholarship
STEP1: Understanding the economic situation of the home-how much is needed in one month or one year?
First of all, let's calculate monthly or annual income and expenditure assuming university life.
Let's calculate the amount you really need, comparing your income and expenditure. Of course, scholarships are required to be returned after graduating from university, and you are responsible for that. To the last, keep the amount to make up for the difference in income and expenditure.
STEP2: Know the types of scholarships-Find a scholarship that suits you-
Scholarships can be broadly divided into "benefit type" and "lending type". In principle, "benefit-type" scholarships are not required to be refunded (return may be required). On the other hand, "loan-type" scholarships are required to be returned at the same time as university graduation (end of loan), and will be returned over a certain period of time. "Lending type" is further classified into interest-free type and interest-bearing type. At present, there are few organizations that implement the benefit type, and the examination is difficult.
Organizations that implement the scholarship system can be broadly divided into the Japan Student Services Organization, local governments, and private scholarship organizations. The Japan Student Services Organization, a national scholarship program, is the most commonly used scholarship in Japan. On the other hand, scholarships for "local governments" and "private scholarship organizations" tend to be interest-free and benefit-type, but the number of employees tends to be small.
Depending on each organization, refunds, interest rates, and loan monthly fees vary. Investigate the characteristics of each organization and find a scholarship that suits your wishes.
STEP3: Understanding how to apply ~ Prepare necessary documents ~
Before applying, please read the application guidelines carefully and check the following items.
- 1.Do you meet the application qualifications, grades, household budget standards, etc. set by each organization?
Scholarships of local governments are often limited to people from each municipality, and age restrictions may be set. - 2.When is the application period (deadline)?
Most of them are from April to May, but some organizations do this before entering university. - 3.Where will the application process be performed?
Basically, there are many things that are done at the window of each organization, but there are also things that are done at universities. - 4.What documents do you need?
Documents to be submitted vary depending on each organization. Some documents (such as proof of income) take some time to order, so please be prepared as soon as possible.
With the above points in mind, prepare the required documents without any incompleteness and apply by the deadline.
Scholarship Q&A
- Q
What kind of scholarships do you have?
- A
Scholarships can be broadly divided into “benefit type (no refund required)” and “lending type (return obligation occurs at the same time as graduation)”. In addition, there are two types of "lending type": interest-free type and interest-bearing type.
As for the types of scholarships, in addition to the Japan Student Services Organization scholarship, which is a national scholarship project, local governments (such as the Board of Education) and private organizations have their own scholarship programs.
- Q
What are the most commonly used scholarships?
- A
This is the Japan Student Services Organization scholarship program.
- Q
When is the recruitment time?
- A
It's concentrated in April.
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
Every April, we are recruiting students for enrollment. An application briefing will be held in early April, so be sure to participate if you wish to receive a scholarship or are considering it. In addition, there is a reservation recruitment system that applies for scholarships before entering university (when in high school). Reservation recruitment will be conducted at the high school where you are enrolled in the third year of high school.[Scholarships for Local Governments and Private Organizations]
In principle, each person will do so at the counter of each organization.

Is it possible to pay both the Japan Student Services Organization scholarship and other scholarships such as local governments?
-

Coordinating with scholarships from other organizations is not prohibited by the Japan Student Services Organization, but in many organizations other than the Japan Student Services Organization prohibit co-payment. For more information, please contact your preferred organization.
- Q
If I meet the conditions such as household budget and academic ability, will I always be hired?
-
A
It may not be available.
It is premised that the conditions and standards set by each organization are met, but even if they are satisfied, they may not be adopted due to budget and recruitment slots.
- Q
This year's recruitment has been over, but scholarships are absolutely necessary. Do you have to wait until next year's recruitment?
-
A
If the household budget changes suddenly due to unemployment, bankruptcy, accident, illness or death of the livelihood maintainer, or disasters such as fires, storms and floods, etc., and scholarships are urgently needed, we are recruiting at any time. Please consult with the support group.
- Q
What is the total return period and the return period?
-
A
It depends on the scholarship organization, loan amount, interest rate, etc.
For the Japan Student Services Organization scholarship, you can estimate the total amount of refund, monthly refund, number of repayments, etc. on the "Scholarship Loan / Return Simulation" site below. Please take advantage of it.
- Q
Will the scholarship be terminated on the way?
-
A
It may be abolished due to poor academic performance.
Scholarships are loaned (benefited) to excellent students who have difficulty studying for economic reasons, so if the number of credits earned is extremely small or if they are resident, the scholarship will be abolished and the transfer will be suspended. The scholarship student qualification will be lost. Please note that return may be demanded in the case of a payment scholarship.
In addition, if you violate the rules set by each organization, your recruitment will be canceled or your loan (benefit) will be terminated. Please read the rules carefully and be aware of it as a scholarship student.
