About revision of scholarship system from 2024

From 2024, the JASSO scholarship system will be revised for the following three points and support will be expanded.

1.Expand the scope of the new system for studying higher education to the middle class

Regarding the “New System for Higher Education Study Support”, which provides tuition reduction and exemption and payment-type scholarships as a set, from the viewpoint of child care support, etc., the scope of support has been expanded to the middle class of multi-child households, and at the same time, the middle class of science and engineering and agriculture It is also expanded to

<Support target>
・The target of the new support category is up to a household income of about 6 million yen (model case).
・Support for multi-child households: Applicable to households with three or more dependent children
・Science and Engineering Support: Faculties and departments that span academic fields are also eligible if science, engineering, and agriculture are included in the field of degree to be awarded (* OIST is not eligible for support in science and engineering).

<Payment level>
・Support for multi-child households: 1/4 of full support
・Science and Engineering Support: Difference in tuition fees with humanities
 ※Focusing on the difference in tuition fees from the humanities and social sciences, we provide support to private schools.

2.Establishment of a “postpayment system for tuition fees” at the master’s stage

A system will be created to pay the tuition fee according to the income after graduation. In payment after graduation, in particular, care will be taken to ensure that payment during the child-rearing period does not become excessive.

<Target persons>
➀Those who have entered a graduate school in Japan since 2024 and who have applied for it through their current school.
➁Those who meet the same household standard and academic performance standard as Class 1 scholarships for the master's level of the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
➂Those who have no reason to not be able to receive the first-class scholarship, such as the return of a scholarship loaned in the past is overdue.

※For FY2024, in addition to the above, only those who fall under the following are eligible. New students enrolled in the spring of 2024, who have been eligible for the new study support system at the undergraduate school, and who have entered graduate school without employment. If the graduate school defers the collection of tuition fees until autumn, the tuition fee will be retroactive to the tuition fee from April 2024 based on the applicant's request.

<The upper limit of tuition fees that can be "postpaid">
・The standard amount of national tuition (approximately 540,000 yen) for national and public institutions

<Payment after graduation>
・Annual income standard for which payment based on income begins: About 3 million yen
・If you exceed the above annual income: Payment of 9% of taxable income
・However, for dependent children, their own dependent deduction shall be established.
 ➜If there are two children, payment according to income will not begin up to an annual income of about 4 million yen.
※It can be used when the student's annual income is less than 3 million yen.

3.Review of the reduction refund system for loan-type scholarships

Regarding the system to reduce the monthly refund amount for fixed-rate refund (* The total refund amount is unchanged), requirements etc. are flexible.

・Increase the maximum annual income available (annual income of 3.25 million yen or less ➜ 4 million yen or less)
・Increased options for return ratio (4 types: 1/2 or 1/3 ➜ 2/3, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4)
