Shimonoseki City University, which is strong in employment

Systematic career education and a wide range of generous support.

Shimonoseki City University claims "Shimonoseki City University, which is strong in employment," and as evidence supporting that word, it achieves a high employment decision rate that exceeds the national average every year. Each and every one of the wide range of generous support, including systematic career education starting in the first year, and friendly support by career counselors and employment counselors, is linked to the ideal job hunting of students. For example, graduates who decided to get a job commented on career education programs, "I used the words of the graduates of Career Design I (changed the title of courses to Career Design A and B from 2023) for interviews," "I deepened my understanding of companies and the image of job hunting at the Joint Industry Study Group on campus," and "I made my future vision clearer through internships."

Reason for strong employment

Employment decision rate

The outlook for the future is uncertain due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the instability of the situation around the world, and the employment environment surrounding students is not optimistic.

However, students have maintained a high employment rate because they were motivated to engage in job hunting while utilizing the systematic career education and diverse employment support of the university, and supported by the high reputation of the company for graduates of the university. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 150 companies and organizations participated in the Joint Industry Study Group, which was held face-to-face in mid-October.

The employment rate of graduates in 2022 was 98.8%. Financial institutions are the highest employment destinations, and the number of students who become public servants has increased year by year. Our students are not only employed in the Chugoku region, including Yamaguchi Prefecture, but also employed in various areas such as Kanto and Kyushu, and graduates are active throughout the country.

Work experience training and internship

A work experience that deepens understanding of working and determines one's own abilities.

During the summer vacation, OIST offers work experience training for the first year or more, and internships for the third year or more.

This is an educational program that allows students to experience work at companies and government offices for more than 5 days (40 hours) and utilize them in their own occupation selection.

In fiscal 2022, due to the impact of COVID-19 infection, some of them were implemented online, and a total of 38 people from 28 companies and organizations participated in the training.

Pre-learning will be conducted on campus before the dispatch. Even after participating in the training, we have prepared a system to follow students' work experience from various aspects by reviewing the preparation of reports and making presentations at briefings.

Since fiscal 2008, we have been sending students overseas to enhance both quality and quantity.

It was an opportunity to reconsider my future

I wanted to work with overseas in the future, and I wanted to expand my English proficiency and ideas, so I participated in online internships, explained the work contents of each company, talked about careers of those who work overseas, and gave presentations on advance assignments.

When I made a presentation by a company saying, "I would like to support small and medium-sized enterprises overseas expansion in the future," I was asked, "From what standpoint do I want to do that job?" I realized that I didn't think specifically where I wanted to work, such as accounting. Before participating, I thought it would be fine if I could do something I wanted to do, but to understand myself what I wanted to do and what I wanted to do, as well as the future potential and characteristics of work, social changes, etc. I felt it was necessary to collect information. I would like to make the most of my learning in this internship in my future career choices.
